DIAPERS:  It may sound like a silly and uninteresting gift, but newborns can go through 10 diapers a day and that becomes a major expense.  Any new parent would be pleased to receive a box or two of size 1 diapers.  With 92 diapers in a box, that makes for a two week supply.

SHOPPING CART COVER:  This is an item that I never would have purchased on my own, but after receiving it as a gift I think that it makes an excellent baby shower present.  This soft cover fits right over a shopping cart seat keeping baby away from all of the germ infested surfaces.

SLEEP SACKS:   A new parent can never have too many of these!  Since loose bedding is not advisable, this keeps baby warm and cozy at night.  Buy one in each size to get the parents through the first year.

SOUND MACHINE:  This is another item that might not be on a new parent’s radar, but can be a life saver.  Used to drown out house noise or even calm a restless baby, it’s sure to be a hit!

DON’T FORGET MOM!

While it’s fun to buy items for the baby, gifts designed specifically for the mom-to-be are always well received.  Here are just a few items designed to pamper:

  • Lumbar Massage Cushion: Great on the sofa or in bed to loosen up a sore back.
  • Spa Basket: A much needed luxury to have in the hospital.
  • Robe: What a treat it is to slip into a new robe after delivery. This long fleece robe is attractive, soft and designed to make any new mom feel special.
  • Book of Advice: You will need a photo album and un-ruled 4×6 index cards. Ask friends and family of the expectant mom to write down bits of advice related to delivery and parenting. Include words of encouragement for the big day!

Choosing the perfect gift for an excited new parent is so fun!  Of course, if you go to the registry, you know that it’s exactly what they want.  But, you can also find gifts separate from the registry which are fun and unexpected yet still practical.  Sometimes, these are the best gifts to receive and the most fun to give.
