Studies show that those will good support systems are happier and healthier. So, don’t hole up during the winter. Pass the time with loved ones.

Get Moving

If you enjoy physical activities, then try some winter sports. It’s never too late to learn to ski, snowboard, or ice skate. Or, take a brisk walk or run. Physical activity is mood enhancing, so if you’re feeling blah, then try moving more.

A bonus to staying active during the winter is that you can drop some pounds before warmer weather.  It’s common for folks to pack on a few pounds during the cold part of the year, but you can shed some weight along with the heavy winter coat by increasing your physical activities.

Develop a New Hobby

Many people find that have spare time on their hands during the winter. There usually are not as many activities going on. Yard work is reduced. Some school or work days get snowed out, or they do here in North Carolina. So, it’s a perfect time to dig in on or develop a new hobby.

My Granny taught me how to embroider. I really enjoy making pretty stitch work, but that always seems to go on the back burner. I was looking through my floss and thinking about starting, at least, a small project. Sometimes those take a couple or three winters to complete, but it’s always nice to have something handmade when I do get done.

I’ve also been thinking about tile work. I love the way items looked tiled. So, I have a book that I’m reading and doing small tile projects. I’m keeping an eye out for a class as well. I think tiling would be a fun new hobby.

If you want to start small, then try a craft kit . There are lots of fun projects that can be done in one evening. My niece especially enjoyed making bracelets and decorating them last month.

Add Laughter to Your Life

Many doctors say that laughter is therapeutic. I know I certainly feel better after a good belly laugh.

Although it seems most television shows now are very dark and dreary or just plain ridiculous, I enjoy reruns of some of the old comedies. Or, I have some DVDs that make me laugh. When all the news is bad and the current shows feature people gaming each other for prizes or wrecking cars, I look for something lighter that will, at least, make me smile.

Before You Know It . . .

It can seem like the winter goes on forever, but the days pass by quickly (especially if you stay active and busy). Use the extra time you get with the chilly season and spring will roll around before you know it.
