  • Balancing Your Family Budget for 2011

Balancing Family BudgetIt’s a new year which means that most of us are making resolutions, changing our diets and kicking up our exercise routines, but have you thought about making changes to your spending habits?  As we come off the holiday season many Americans find themselves faced with credit card debt.  Those toys and gifts that you promised to pay off next month…..well, next month is here and the longer you wait to pay off your bills, the more you’ll pay in interest.

  • Do Your Own Taxes This Year

You pay a bundle to have your taxes prepared, and unless you have really complicated taxes, you can do them yourself and save that money to do something fun. I’ve been doing my own taxes for years, and it really isn’t all that hard.

A good starting place if you’re considering doing your taxes is your last year’s returns. Take a look at those to get an idea of the number of forms and types that you’ll need to complete your taxes. Most people have similar tax return packages year to year.

  • Save Money on Your Heating Bill

This is the time of year when opening your heating bill can literally cause heart palpatations.  Heating your home is expensive during the deep cold months of winter.  Sometimes, there’s just no way to avoid this major expense – we need to heat our homes.  However, there are things that you can do in and around your home to reduce your energy consption thereby saving you valuable dollars every month.

  • Keep Your House Warm During the Winter and Save Money

Ouch! I hate to open the gas bill during the winter, and I live in North Carolina which everyone probably knows is not really a cold state. Since there are things that I’d much rather buy than heat, I’ve found several ways to cut our heating costs without freezing the family.

The first thing I did was look around for cold spots in the house. Sure. You can hire someone to do this, but I could pretty easily walk around and simply feel problem areas. One spot was the fireplace (which I do love). This is an old house, and no damper was installed, so I got fireplace doors to shut off that obvious space where cold air was coming in.

  • How to Stay Out of Debt During the Holidays

It can be really tempting to overspend during the holidays. Then, the new year rolls in . . . and the bills arrive in the mailbox. That’s not so special. You can, however, plan ahead and pledge to make this a year where you keep things real, have a really good time, and keep your finances under control.

  • Planning is the Key to Black Friday Shopping

It’s the biggest shopping day of the year – Black Friday. You sleep off your big Thanksgiving dinner and then you go brave the crowds to get the best deals and to get ready for Christmas. But, ARGH . . . Black Friday can be a nutty day to shop if you do not plan ahead.

You likely get a lot of flyers before Black Friday listing out the various sales. That information is also online for most of the major retailers. If you really do want the best deals and to save money, then check and see what is on sale and compare prices to the regular prices. Not all deals are created equal.

  • Shopping Online for the Holidays

If you dread holiday shopping and all the crowds, then consider shopping online this year. Perhaps you already do some of your shopping on the computer but use that option as a last resort. Rethink your strategy and save time, money, and your sanity.

I’ll admit I was an early online shopper. I am the type who likes to compare styles, features, and prices, so it takes me forever when I go to the mall. Also, I hate the crowds especially during holiday times when some people will almost come to blows over the last “whatever” on the shelf.
