When it comes to cooking, you might have every kitchen gadget known to man. Better yet, you might actually use them all. As the holidays approach, the time is perfect to treat yourself – or a friend who cooks a lot – to some new kitchenware. You might not be angling for a shopping spree filled with gas ranges, bottom-freezer refrigerators, or new granite countertops for the kitchen, but you might find – or want to add – these items to your holiday wish list before it’s too late.

It’s all about the green on March 17 across much of the globe when folks celebrate the life of Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. If you are looking for a green colored treat to make and eat with the kids (or the young at heart), then whip up some cupcakes and use food coloring to get the holiday green theme going.
You can, of course, make cupcakes from scratch, but most kids today seem to like the lighter texture of boxed mix when it comes to portable cake treats. That makes this treat super easy to make. Just grab a boxed cake mix and whip up cupcakes.

I grew up loving Kellogg’s Rice Krispie Treats. The recipe first graced the back of the cereal box back in 1941 – quite before my time. The classic cereal candy was one of the first recipes I learned to make though, and I quickly adapted it by adding peanut butter.
Everyone always goes wild for my Rice Krispie Treat bars. My aunt said that she’d never really liked the cereal candy very much, but mine were better than others she had tried. She asked about my secret, and I shared of course.
My secret is not really a secret, and I know other home cooks who also add peanut butter to the candy recipe. It does make the treats richer and fuller in flavor. It also adds a little protein.

Have you looked in your trash can lately? I mean – really looked. If your household is like most others, then you probably are throwing out a lot of food. That means money down the drain – or more specifically out on the curb. With the price of food going up and with people going to bed hungry across the globe, it’s a real shame to throw out food.
My grandparents had a small farm on the side in addition to my grandfather working as a builder. Everyone in the family worked together to grow and harvest the garden. Meat was processed, packed, and put in the chest freezer. With all the work involved, nothing was taken for granted, and even the “spare parts” that would gross out generations today were treasured, lovingly prepared, and served.

One of my favorite comfort dishes is a hamburger and potato casserole. My aunt in Maryland made this dish when we visited back when I was in high school, and I’ve continued to make this tasty casserole over all the years.
My aunt told me that she didn’t really have a recipe for her Hamburger Potato Casserole. It’s just a flexible main dinner dish that can be adjusted depending on how many are eating. I like having a dish in my rotation that can be made for the family or for a crowd.
Another thing I like about this casserole is that the basic ingredients are simple, and I almost always have them on hand. By changing the seasoning (depending on what I have in the cabinet), I can also but a little twist on the casserole from one time to the next.

I had not planned to jump on the George Foreman press grill bandwagon. But I saw a GF on sale, and I just couldn’t pass it up. I’m sure glad I decided to go ahead and get an indoor grill, because I’ve found so many quick and easy foods that turn out great press grilled.
To start with, I just made hamburgers and chicken breasts on the George Foreman grill. That’s what I’d heard other people talking about press grilling, and the George Foreman is great for quick indoor grilled meats.
I did, of course, jazz up my meats a little. They taste kind of bland if you just put meat in the George Foreman and press and eat. My son noted this when he made some pork chops at college, and I told him he needs to get creative.

My Mom is the Queen of Broccoli Soup. She makes up a batch of Broccoli Cheese soup, and then she keeps it warming in the crock pot where everyone can get a bowl when they like. That’s a yummy welcome home, and the Broccoli Soup is easy to make too.
Mom said one of the ladies at church brought Broccoli Cheese soup to a ladies meeting, and she asked her how to make it, since Mom fell in love with the soup. The church lady told my Mom that there are several ways to make the soup.
The easiest way is to buy a pack of Broccoli Cheese Soup mix, follow the directions, and then add frozen broccoli florets to the mixture. That makes a chunkier soup. But, the soup can also be made from scratch and with a creamier texture.

You’re hosting the gang for the football game. It’s going to be a big time. You have the house picked up, but you need some munchies. It’s not much a party without some yummy game day eats. With so many options out there, there’s something for everyone – from the gourmet to the kitchen challenged.
I’ve found that football fans eat a lot of food, but they really aren’t hard to please. If you have tasty food and plenty of it, then football fans are happy. This can be sandwiches, chips, dips, pretzels , or other classic munchies.
But, since I enjoy cooking and entertaining, I like to make the munchies more memorable. Here are a few of my game day food ideas.

If you’ve read any Greek literature, then you may recognize ambrosia as meaning “food of the gods.” And, if you like to cook, then you may be familiar with Ambrosia Salad which features mandarin orange slices and coconut. If you’re ready for a new spin, then true this super easy Ambrosia Cake for a heavenly yummy dessert inspired by the original salad recipe.
My great-grandmother was a cook on a riverboat out of New Orleans. Although, the river boat foodies were called cooks, they were basically the chefs of that era. Certainly, my great-grandmother was one of the finest cooks in the mountains of Virginia after she married my great-grandfather and started a family. She made all kinds of exotic dishes for her time period including ambrosia salad.
